In recent R&D tests we are seeing improved visibility on pages with two H1 tags. All of the SEO blogs say one is the limit but Google themselves actually say there is no requirement or limit for H1s. So far adding more than two H1s has actually been detrimental but two appears to be the current ideal.
Let’s try this tactic out on a wider scale and experiment with an old-school SEO faux pas. On any page you see struggling to rank for primary keyword+geo combinations, try one of these options:
OPTION 1: Leave the automated H1 live and add a second H1 to the top of page content. Something that reads naturally like this:
<h1>Primary Keyword in City1, City 2, and City3</h1>
***If that heading shows up too large, feel free to add a class like this: <h1 class=“h3”>Text</h1>
OPTION 2: Turn off the automated H1 and add two manual H1 tags to the page:
<h1>Primary Keyword in City1, City 2, and City3</h1>
…half of the regular page content and subheadings…
<h1>Secondary Keyword for City 3, City1, City 2, and Surrounding Areas</h1>
…remaining half of the regular page content and subheadings…
Keep in mind – The intended function of an H1 is to indicate the overall topic discussed beneath it, both subheadings and paragraphs. You may need to customize your approach based on the page you are optimizing. Here are two examples:
EXAMPLE 1: “AC Repair” Page
– This page talks about only one topic so we can safely assume everything presently on the page will relate to both our H1s
<h1>Air Conditioning Repair in Buffalo, Depew, and Hamburg NY</h1>

– This page actually covers two different topics (heating and cooling) so we can use multiple H1s to address that:
